Writer's picture: Paulina WojciechowskaPaulina Wojciechowska

The hummingbirds are amazing and beautiful creatures. There are about 53 species of them in Costa Rica, but only 2 of them are really endemic to this country.

I will write down now for you some interesting facts about these birds.

The size of hummingbird's brain is very big- it is the largest of any other bird's brain relative to its body size. That makes these creatures pretty smart. They feed on flower nectar, but they can obtain some protein from small insects as well. Thwie wings move around 60 times per second, and the horned sungem can beat its wings 90 times per second (it is in the Guinness Book of Records). The heart of a hummingbird represents 2,5% of its total weight. It can beat up to 1200 times per minute. The unique architecture of its wings enables it to fly forward, straight up and down, or to remain suspended in the air. It is the only bird in the world which can fly backwards. All of the hummingbirds are endemic to Americas.
